350,000 Defective Ring Doorbells (2nd Generation) Being Recalled
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that Ring is recalling 350,000 defective video doorbells (2nd Generation) due to a fire hazard. The recall involves ONLY the 2nd Generation model number 5UM5E5 Ring smart doorbell cameras. (Ring/Amazon say there’s only a risk if the wrong screws were used for installation.)
According to Ring, owners should not use any screws other than those included with the product. Those instructions are available for download on Ring’s website. The instructions note that “if you use the wrong screws to secure the Video Doorbell, you could damage the battery during installation, create a fire hazard, and be seriously injured.” According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, “The video doorbell’s battery can overheat when the incorrect screws are used for installation, posing fire and burn hazards.”.
About 350,000 second-generation Ring Video Doorbells sold in the U.S. are affected, the commission said.
New Ring installation instructions can be downloaded here.
